Improving Connectivity in the Central Forest Spine or IC-CFS is a collaborative effort between the Malaysian Government and international bodies to conserve biodiversity and ecosystem services in three critical landscapes of the Central Forest Spine. With fundings from Global Environment Facility (GEF) and support from United Nation Development (UNDP), our journey to restore the connectivity between forest complexes is on its way to success. We envision a contiguous forest – a haven rich in flora and fauna that benefits our community through sustained biodiversity and ecosystem services.
We aim to protect and preserve the rich biodiversity and ecosystems within the Central Forest Spine, through the implementation of three core components under this project.
Increase connectivity between forests and intensify law enforcement against wildlife and forestry crimes
Implementing biodiversity and ecosystem into land-use plannings for a sustainable forest management
Identify alternative resources for the Central Forest Spine conservation and mainstream biodiversity into development plans

Known as Peninsular Malaysia’s green lung, the vast and rich forests were institutionally conceptualised as the Central Forest Spine in 2009. It is the backbone of Malaysia’s environmentally sensitive area network, compromising of four major forest complexes spread across eight states. With abundant biodiverse ecosystems, these forest reserves are our most critical assets that must be protected and conserved. Situated within the critical areas of the Central Forest Spine are IC-CFS’ project sites.
