Amanjaya Forest Reserve to benefit from Malaysia Greening Programme

Introduction

SOME 650 trees will be planted in Amanjaya Forest Reserve in Hulu Perak, under the Tanam-On-The-Go programme. The trees will be planted within a one-hectare area of the forest reserve in 10 days.

The programme was initiated by the Improving Connectivity in the Central Forest Spine (IC-CFS) Project, in collaboration with Forestry Department, Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) and Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM).

It is meant to enhance the connectivity of fragmented forest landscapes and conserve biodiversity. It is also part of the Malaysia Greening Programme under the 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign by the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry.

The programme was launched by Forestry Department director-general Datuk Mohd Ridza Awang near the Titiwangsa Rest and Restoration Area in Gerik last week.

In his speech, Perak Forestry Department director Datuk Mohamed Zin Yusop said the programme would help maintain the forest and protect the natural fauna and flora.

Zin also called upon private bodies and the public to work together to preserve the forest.

“A joint effort is needed to maintain our commitment to keep at least half of our total land area under forest cover.

“It will also help to protect our native wildlife from extinction,” he said.

IC-CFS national project director Datuk Zahari Ibrahim said they hoped to increase the public’s awareness and knowledge of the foundation of the Central Forest Spine (CFS) and IC-CFS Project.

“We hope the public will know how beneficial it is to improve forest habitats and the environment for the local community and their livelihood,” he said.

He added that this would be “in-line with our objectives in underpinning the protection of biodiversity, reduction of carbon emissions, enhancement of ecosystem services and managing forests sustainably in partnership with the community, non-governmental organisations and related agencies by 2023.”

The IC-CFS Project aims to conserve the biodiversity and ecosystem of forest landscapes within the CFS. Incepted in 2014, the project is led by Forestry Department in collaboration with Perhilitan and FRIM. It is supported by the United Nations Development Programme and the Global Environment Facility grant.
