Reconnecting the Forests

What is the Central Forest Spine (CFS)?

CFS is a combination of 8 forest complexes covering 6.71 million hectare across 8 states in Peninsular Malaysia. It forms the backbone of Environment Sensitive Area (ESA) in Peninsular Malaysia to protecting wildlife, safeguarding clean water and supporting our lives and well-being.

Protect Our Five Iconic Wildlife Species

The Malayan tiger, Asian elephant, Malayan tapir, Malayan sun bear, and Malayan leopard are five iconic forest-dwelling species that depend on the CFS forest landscape for their survival.

14 Strategies.
228 Initiatives.

The Strategic Plan 2022–2040 was approved on 20 July 2022 at the 40th MPFN Meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister of Malaysia. It was subsequently launched on 22 March 2023 in conjunction with the International Day of Forests, with the aim of restoring and strengthening the country's ecological network through an integrated approach.

One Forest. Eight Complexes. One Mission.

For decades, our forests have become fragmented—divided by roads, plantations and development. PIRECFS 2022 provides the roadmap to reconnect them. Watch this video.

Why is
the CFS Important?

Habitat for Diverse Species

The CFS provides habitat for a wide variety of terrestrial and aquatic plant and animal species.

Water and Ecosystem Services

The CFS serves as an important forested water catchment, supplying raw water, supporting oxygen production, reducing soil erosion, mitigating natural hazards, regulating local temperatures, and maintaining ecological balance.

High-Value Natural Resources

The CFS contains highly valuable natural resources that are conserved and protected to support long-term sustainability and the well-being of the global environment.

CFS Ecological Linkages

Ecological linkages are forested habitats and movement corridors that connect fragmented forest areas within the CFS, enabling wildlife to move between them through natural forest linkages and landscape features such as rivers, valleys, and ridges. These ecological linkages are important for:

Map Legend

What is the difference between Primary Linkage and Secondary Linkage?

Primary Linkage

A continuous forest corridor that directly connects two major forest complexes, providing a primary movement route for large wildlife such as tigers and elephants.

Secondary Linkage

A network of small forest “stepping stones” that connects isolated areas to a Primary Linkage across plantations and settlements.

Apakah perbezaan Rangkaian Utama dan Sekunder?

Rangkaian Utama

Jalur hutan tanpa putus yang menyambung terus dua kompleks hutan besar, menjadi laluan utama haiwan besar seperti Harimau dan Gajah.

Rangkaian Sekunder

Rangkaian “batu loncatan” hutan kecil yang menyambung kawasan terpisah ke Rangkaian Utama, melintasi ladang dan kawasan penduduk.
